Summary or Abstract : The present study tried to investigate the role of reading in general, and reading literature in particular, in the enrichment of the EFL / ESL learners' vocubulary. The null hypotheses were: 1. There is no significant difference in the performance of the EFL / ESL students on the multiple - choice test of vocubulary before and after reading(for meaning). 2. There is no significant difference in the performance of the EFL / ESL students on the multiple - choice test of vocubulary before and after reading non - literary texts, and their perfomance on the same test before and after reading literary texts. 3. There are no significant correlations between the vocubulary enrichment of the EFL / ESL students after reading both literary and non - literary texts, and their general proficiency level. The finding of this research led to the following conclusions: First, reading leads to the vocubulary enrichment of the EFL / ESL students. Second, reading literature results in the vocabulary expansion of the EFL/ ESL students( This was the most important conclusion draw from this research). Third, there are significant correlations between the vocabulary enrichment of the EFL / ESL students after reading both literary and non - literary texts, and their general proficiency level. The findings, therefore , have important implications for teachers, material writers and test developers..
