Summary or Abstract : This study intends to investigate the interactive roles played by the sequenceof sentences in a text, text - specific prior knowledge, language proficiency, and text - type in verbal comprehension. It is obvious that the way sentences are arranged in a text has asignificant role in comprehension of that text. Sequence contributes to the ease with which discourses are understood, but the ways in which it makes this contribution are not completely understood. The study employed a scrambled sentence paradigm and the manipulation of text specific prior knowledge to support this intent. The results indicate that subjects capitalize on recent text - specific knowledge to build transient memory structures that significantly improve performance on cloze tests. but only when those cloze tests are encoutered in exactly the same order as in the intact text. The findings are taken to support the claim that the subjects that were studied here dependend far more on the data of surface elements than on preexisting memorial data for comprehension and interpretation of texts. in other words, these findings are interprered as evidence of subjects(non - natives) text boundness..
