Summary or Abstract : Reading for comprehension plays an important role in the process of foreign language learning. Top - down processing research shows that the greater the background knowledge a reader has of a text's content area, the better the reader will comprehend that text. In addition, research documents that a reader's background knowledge affects the information recalled from a text. This study was set out serve two purposes relative to the three paratextual aids: (a) investigate the effect of the three aids on the comprehension and recall of EFL texts read by low and low intermediate - proficiency readers. (b) determine the relationship between comprehension and recall, two major goal of reading, in low - and low intermediate proficiency readers. The results suggest that (a) only low - intermediate proficiency readers are able to capitalize on the aids to enhance their comprehension. (b) neither low - proficiency nor low - intermediate proficiency readers are sensitive to the three aids for their recall task. (c) the significant correlation between comprehension and recall in low - proficiency readers ceases to exist in low - intermediate proficiency readers..
