Summary or Abstract : Edward Albee who has been apologetically by Martin Esslin An absurd dramatist, and has been indiscriminately identified by other critics as being related to the absurd theatre, and still by others as one who shares the same quality with English and European Absurdists, has called the theatre of the absurd an absurd label. Esslin himself seems to very cautious in his grouping together the playwrights whom he calls absurdists and leaves open the possibility that some of these dramatists might sometime develop a firm ideological basis which might result in their isolation from the movement. In truth, Esslin predicts that dramatists like Albee whom he think have been under the influence of theatre of the absurd and have employed its froms and techniques, may one day depart from this make - believe dramatic school by commiting themselves to an ideology, the very factor which would set them apart from others in this school.Indeed this happens during the course of Albee's dramtic development as Albee proposes a theory which sems to be in keeping with the tradition of protest and confrontation rather than the absurd. Albee seems to be divorced from the theater of the absurd on account of the fact that absurd is siad to be a kind of bewilderment at the illogicality of the world, not an ideology. Therefore it should not be difficult to debunk Albee's false reputation as an absurdist, suffice it to show Albee's commitment to the cause of human dignity in the history of protest and confrontation in the theatre, then one shall be able to see the line of demarcation between albee's theatre and that of the absurd..
