Summary or Abstract : Foreign language learners encounter different kinds of problems in reading different textual materials. An important area of syntax and textual organization which is problematic for most EFL readers is the area of cohesion which involes the grammatical and lexical relationships between different elements of a text. Research indicates that students of foreign language encounter lots of problems in reading with regard to cohesion and cohesive devices. In a study by Cohen and colleagues, the resaerchers found out that foreign readers of English in the sciences and economics did not pick up on conjunctive words in their specialized texts. The present study was set out to serve two purposes relative to the function of cohesive devices in reading comprehension: 1. To investigate the role of cohesive devices in reading comprehension and 2. To determine the relation between language proficiency level and recognition of these devices in reading comprehension. The results indicated a high degree of correlation between subjects score in the test of grammar and their scores in the test of reading comprehension..
