Summary or Abstract : The literature on translation has been dominated, and to a degree still is, by along eastablished debate about the status of translation as an art or ascience. Linguists approached translation from a scientific point of view, seeking to describe translation objectively.The present study was an attempt to evaluate objectively the significant proposal made in one of the most well known and " comprehensive " translation theories suggested by netmark, 1981 And 1988, with regard to scientific texts. Two dimentions of netmark's theory of translation were investigated in the study: First, Newmark distinguished a semantic translation from communicative one as the only two methods of translating which fulfill the two aims of translation: accuracy and economy. Second, another dimention of Newmark's theory was related to his categories of language functions and text types. Accordingly, the present study aimed at exploring the nature of the two well known approaches, semantic and communicative translation as regards their application to scientific texts. Concerning the aformentioned research question, the following null hypothesis was proposed: - There is no significant difference between the use of semantically or communicatively translates scientific texts. resarding the comprehension of Iranian readers..
