Summary or Abstract : At the age of seventy, Henry James provided the " beginners approaching the vast Henry James oeuvre " with guide of " two lists containing ". Five title, two title - The wings of the Dove and the Golden Bowl - were common in both lists but " the first one " contained other titles of which one can name The Portrait of a Lady. Though written at a much earlier time before his mature style, The Portrait of a Lady has been considered as a masterpiece because of its wll - developed structure, its influential preface and its mediative position between his first and Major phases. The question of morality is a powerful force in determining the value of literature and fiction is no exception. Concerning its influential nature and its claim to reality, many dispositions have been made throught the ages of literary ceiticism. The main opposition to the influence of literature belongs to plato who considered it morally dangerous and, in reverse, to Aristotle who maintained an edifying role. As an innovative from and in its consideration of social milieu, novel has testified to these trends more than other literary forms..
