Summary or Abstract : This thesis is an exploratory study into the role played by value systems in the process of planned social change, particularly when such a change effort attempts to modify a community's exisring value system. More specifically, the study's aim is to identify factors which can either facilitiate or inhibit the process of planned social change. The thesis, in its initial chapters, explains the characteristics and objectives of the shah - People revolution, how this was chosen as an example of planned social change, which articles and aspects of this planned change are to be subsequently analyzed, and finally develops a conceptual framework involving the concept of value systems, for anlyzing this change process. It next present an overview of Iran's history and attempts to ascertain its traditional value system. It also gives a brief description of the SPR's various articles and explains its underlying value system. Subsequently, the thesis analyzes three such articles, using the conceptual framework developed in earlier chapters. The tentative findings of the study suggest that there are several factors that either facilitate or inhibit the process of change. These are, first, the intensity of conflict between the value system implicit in the program of planned change and that currently subscribed to by the community where the change is being implemented, the greater this conflict the more resistance will there be generated against that change..
