Summary or Abstract : Story - telling is a very old artistic endeavour. Its origin can be traced back to the advent of civilization. The first story - teller might have been an unknown primitive man who thought of ralaxing himself and his companions after getting bored with the struggles of daily life by telling a story. Any story - telleris moved to relate the tale in response to two deeply rooted instincts: the desire to amuse, and the desire to teach. There is an ingrained love of stories within each of us. Stories have been told all over the world since time immemorial. It is the outcome of the fascinating and charming activity of the creative mind of the story - tellers, everyone who tells a story tries to lift the related matters out of the ordinary level on to the plane of an imaginative understanding of the facts of life. we can say that stories are the story - teller's attempt at idealization of life or seeing deep into it to depict the forces involved in shaping our desting. The latter is what Thomas Hardy succeeded to do in the tales of " Wessex " and its people. He, himself, Once made a valuable comment on story - telling, writing: " A story must be exceptional enough to justify its telling.we tale - tellers are all Ancient Mariners and none of us is warranted in stopping wedding guests... unless he has something more unusual to relate than the ordinary experience of every average man and women.".
