Summary or Abstract : Some outstanding critics and thinkers have credited O'Neill with the development of modern drama in America. many rank him with Ibsen, Shaw and strindberg. He is considered to be the greatest of the American Playwrights. He was acomparatively unknown playwright when his first long play. " Beyond the Horizon ", was produced in 1920 , and he won the Pulitzer Prize. Then followed some twenty full - lenght plays. In 1939 , warned by physical illness that time might be running short , he turned to a group of autobiographical plays which, he had been contemplating much longer before. That was supposed to be his final project. In six brief months he wrote the over lengthy play , " The Iceman Cometh ", and in the next three years completed " Long Day's Journey Into Night " and " A Moon For The Misbegotten "..
