Summary or Abstract : On reading the critical literature on tragedy, the reader is very much impressed by the number of different definitions given to tragedy. For example Joseph Wood Krutch states that no modern play is tragic because the protagonist does not have exalted rank, Or the fact some other crtics accept as tragedy and serious play that involves conflict and suffering. F.L. Lucas in his book "Tragedy ", says that "Serious drama is a serious representation by speech and action of some phase of human life. If there is an unhappy ending, we may call it tragedy, but if the play is a serious attempt to represent life, it makes no great difference whether or not good fortune intervenes in the last scene". In Greek tragedy, that is, after we read a Greek drama we say " what a pity it had to be this way". In this kind of drama the sense of fate, existing in forces outside of man is clearly seen. The destiny of the hero is foretold. The events are in a manner which the hero is not resposible..
