Summary or Abstract : Whenever man has endeavoured to deal with and explain the world of ideas, he has been obliged to clothe it with tangible images. Plato, apparently an arch - enemy of poetry, unconsciously employs literary techniques to illiminate his notions of the cosmos. This proves there is something in man that makes him use allegories , metaphors and symbolisms as soon as he is fased with an undefinable phenomenon. Psychologists have come up with some explanations or justifications for this. They maintain that there are different ways of thinking under different conditions. Jung introduced two kinds of thinking when he tried to explain where the mind's aptitude for symbolical expression comes from, one was directed and adapted and the other subjective which is actuated by inner motives. if the latter from is not constantly corrected by adapted thinking, it will " produce an overwhelmingly subjective and distorted picture of the world. Jung's directed and fantasy thinking is compared with and likened to Freud's directed and secondary process activity: Directed thinking involves the conscious use of language and concepts. It based on, or constructed with reference to reality. Essentially, directed thinking is communicative, thinking outwards, to others, for others. It is the language of the intellect, of scientific exposition, and common sense..
