Summary or Abstract : Looking through the history of language teaching we realize that in each period scolars have introduced different methods and approaches in language teaching such as grammar translation , audio - lingual, cognitive, innovative and eclectic one. they are generally based on psychological and linguistic studies and some on trials and errors. Although these methods have had a great impact on foreign language teaching, they lack efficacy if not completely at least to some extent. This is methods baside giving knowledge should also give pleasure and encouragement. They should attract students and make them go through the text deeper and deeper by reading every single sentence. Thus comes the question of what kind of text should be use in FLT? can a literary text be used in FLT or not? If so what should be the methodology for teaching drama, Novel , short story , poetry etc? and how is a teacher able to use literary text for improving language skills? How can he teach listening comprehension , speaking , reading comprehension and writing? Finding a suitable response for the above questions is not an easy task, it needs having a good knowledge of literture and language teaching. In this thesis the researcher is going to find answers for the questions but first of all it is essential to define literature from the view point of literary scholars and linguists..
