Summary or Abstract : No one can deny the importance of learning a foreign language in an era of mass communication. It seems that the global tendency towards foreign language learning. which started at the time of the second world war, is now is full swing, this world - wide tendency has automatically necessitated wide - range research on diffearent aspects language teaching and learning encompasses. The constraints and impediments that prevailed the process of teaching / learning a foreign language intrigued the experts and field - practitoners to dip into the systems underlying the build - up of different languages with the hope that such discovery would facilitate the toilsome task of teaching / learning. This type on investigations and scrutinizations which originaly aimed at discovering the areas different languages sahre in common or hold in contrast , eventuallly , gave birth to a new discipline we know today as " Contrastive Analysis". This thesis subscribes to the view that an understanding of the similarities and differences between language systems is beneficial to the teaching / learning of the two languages and thus is attempting at carrying out a contrastive analysis of two language entities commonly found in Persian and in English. This thesis aims at eliciting the underlying rules, if any goveringthe build - up of these bi - nominals and secondly at camparing these contrasting rules in the two languages.It is assumed that once, or if common grounds between the two linguistic entities are unearthed and the differences there between recoginzed , one could direct the findings toward pedagogical applications of whatsoever nature and purpose..
