Summary or Abstract : In the begining I had my personal reason for choosing this subject, and later by gaining some extra information, I was persuaded more to work on it. When I started to work on Hardy's novel, I was puzeled because of many aspects in it that I had disregarded before. It was his last work of fiction that received the least appriciation and the most attack among his works. A bitter attack with a review in Blackwoods entitled " The Anti - Marriage Leage ", and the Bishop of Wakefield, disgusted with the novel's " insolence and indecency ", threw it into the fire. The New York Bookman commented: " It is simply one of the most onjectionable books that we have ever read in any language whatsoever ". The attacks were mostly on " the greater part of the story " - according to Hardy himself the part which presented the shattered ideals of the two chief characters. I read the story for the second time and it seemed to me full of points to be discussed. But to avoid an ambigious research and because of the many aspects that are discussable I have chosen the subject already mentioned to be discussed here..
