Summary or Abstract : The anticipated british withdrawal from Aden and eventually from the Persian Gulf, called for new strategies vis - a - vis the superpowers and the Middle Eastren states especially Iran. Since then the changing international context, from confrontation and hostility to limited cooperation between the superpowers has not decreased Iran's security and maneuverability. The gradual rise in iran's economic and military capabilities caused the superpowers to realize that Iran could play a more active regional role. Industerial development in general and oil industry particularly during the past ten years has produced far greater direct effect on Iran's international relations. Through a series of bilateral agreement with the Soviet union, Russia has involved both in Iran's economic development projects and in her military program. This study is directed toward the impact of the superpowers rivaleries in the persian Gulf area. The study also attempts to present the relations between the British withdrawal of forces from the Middle East area and the building of powerful military forces by Iran and other persian Gulf nations. Furthermore, the role of outside powers which may have been affected politically, economically and strategically in relations to the Gulf states, is analyzed..
