Summary or Abstract : What is tragedy? People have been trying to give a satisfactory definition of this term and they have never succeeded. Tragedy, almost as much as the more broadly inclusive word " poetry ", is impossible to define satisfactorily and all of us, it seems, have to rely on our intuitions in the end. It becomes particularly problematic when the word tragedy, as it is popularly defined, does not fit some of the most famous definitions suggested by literary critics and philosophers. Tragedy has become a common name for any painful experience or incident of a distressfull nature, an early death, an unexpected death, a financial failure, a smash on the road and, in so far as it is popularly used as the name of a literary genre, it is applied to any play or story with an unhappy ending. The " educated " response is, however, very often to dismiss use if the word as a journalistic debasement.Tragedy is used to describe certain disastrous events in life. It is also a name derived from a particular kind of dramatic art. This coexistence of meaning, according to William , seems quite natural and there is no fundamental difficulty in both seeing their relations and distinguishing between them..
