Summary or Abstract : This study was an attempt to answer the following research question: which one of the these two factors is more powerful in listening comprehension of advanced students of English: linguistic knowledge or background knowledg?. " Advanced students " in this study are those EFL Iranian students who scored 75 or above on a proficiency test. There were 64 students who took part in this study. 32 subjects form one class formed the experimental group, and the other 32 from another class formed the control group. Both groups took a thirty - item, multiple - choice test of listening comprehension. The test consisted of six short passages on various subjects. Each passage was followed by five questions. Both groups listened to the passages on the tape - recorder. The subjects in the experimental group, however, were involved in a pre - listening task of no more than five minutes before listening to the texts. This pre - listening task was in the form of a question and answer discussion which was meant to creat an information gap. After calculating the mean score of each group, a t - test was run to determine whether the difference was significant or not. Since the t - value found was larger than the t - critical value in the table of student's distribution, the null hypothesis was rejected and it was found that the difference in mean scores was due to the experimental treatment..
