Summary or Abstract : The present study attempts to explore some issues of teaching word pronunciation at both theoretical and experimental levels. on the theoretical ground, the study is concerned with finding and formulating pedagogically - applicable rules to predict the pronunciation of English words. The purpose has been to find ways to help the English majors at the university level to find out the pronunciation of new words using the information contained in the orthography. The rules that are formulated here are based on generative phonology and assert that the pronunciation of English words is predictable. At the experimental level, the rules thus formulated are tested in real classroom situations to see how efficient they are. The experiment reveals a statistically significant difference betweeen the members of the experimental group who were exposed to the pronunciation rules and those of the control group who were not taught the rules. Also. an experiment was designed to match the rules with the intuition of the educated native speakers of British English. British English was chosen for this study because the existing learner centred rules were concerned with American English, and there was a need for the application of generative phonology to British English..
