Summary or Abstract : This study examines what has been referred to in the SLA literature as the Defective Tense Hypothesis, the primacy of Aspect Hypothesis, or simply the Aspect Hypothesis on the one hand and the Narrative Hypothesis on the other. Both rival hypotheses attempt to account for the nontarget - like emergence of verb inflections in interlanguage. The Aspect Hypothesis holds that nascent verb inflections are controlled in large part by aspectual distinctions inherent in the verb or predicate. The Narrative Hypothesis, on the other hand. suggests that a relationship exists between the use of verbal morphology and the foreground and the background of the narrative. This cross - sectional study examines 127 written naratives produced in a film retell task by Persian - speaking learners of English as a foreign language. Approaching the narratives from two perspectives, from the perspective of lexical aspect, concentrating on Durativity / Punctuality dichotomy, and from the perspective of narrative structure, taking grounding as an environment for acquisition of tense / aspect, the study finds that lexical aspect plays a more significant role in the acquisition of tense / aspect morphology than does the narrative structure..
