Summary or Abstract : Facts say Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man is no autobiography. Despite this legitimate conviction, however, there may be those who share the idea that of few descriptions ever satisfying the totality of the novel, the word " autobiographical " is certainly among the most inclusive. Minds so pregnated, then , should concur that the significance of the novel lies not as much in the appreciation of its narrative soul - superb in its own right - as in an identification of the hero's life story with an artistic process. The question of " how " Stephen paces up the path of this artistic process has long interested so many readers of Joyce. There have been as well readers greatly absorbed in finding a convincing " why ". In other words, their scrutiny has mostly focused on one fundamental question: 'What is it in stephen that manifests itself as so exceptional a drive? The exuberance of traits Stephen exhibits throughout the novel, thus designating himself as a genius - and I wonder if there are minds, having read him, who feel disturbed if I call him so - originates at its deepest base from his enjoying a tendency inside to be different.
