Summary or Abstract : The art fiction does not begin until the novelist thinks of his story as a matter to be shown, to be so exhibited that it will tell itself. Forty years after percy Lubbock made this statement in the Craft of fiction, the truth of it is brought under question by wanye C. Booth in his Rhetoric of Fiction. In Booth's belief all such claims, calling for the elimination of the auther's direct voice as a requirement for gaining obgectivity, and any preference for showing against telling for the same reason, raised after Flaubert, are unreasonable and dogmatic. In his view, even if an author avoids personal intrusions, such as those made by fielding in his novels, his vision . judgment and comments can still be detected by vigilant readers through other means that the author uses to shape his material. Booth suggests that these disguised commentaries have the same guiding and evaluative role as the direct commentary, since they affect the readers' mind in one way or another, by controlling their emotions, influencing their interpretation and judgment, or in a word, by driving them towards the author's desired impression..
