Summary or Abstract : Current models of listening explain the listening process as an active constructive one in which background knowledge is crucial. The present study was an attempt to add new information to the existing knowledge and to investigate into the effect of topic familiarity and background Knowledge on listening comprehension, More specifically this study aimed at finding answers to the following questions: 1. Does topic familiarity have a significant effect on EFL learners listening comprehension? 2. Does the proficiency level of the students affect their listening comprehension of a fammiliar topic? The following null hypothesis were also developed: 1. there is no significant correlation between topic familiarity and the degree of listening comprehension. 2. The effects of the topic familiarity do not vary with the students proficiency levels. The experiment was applied to a group of freshmen students of Allameh tabatabaii university. The subjects were exposed to listening material representing familiar and unfamiliar topics. After having listened to each of the record inys the were tested multiple choice questions in their native language. The subject showed a greater degree of comprehension with familiar topics regardless of their proficiency levels..
