Summary or Abstract

This study attemts to investigate one of the first and most extensively discussed parameters proposed in the Government and Binding framework, namely, the Pro - drop or null subject parameter, at both theoretical and experimental levels. At the theoretical level, the status of Persian as a pro - drop language is examined. It is shown that while persian manifests some of the main properties proposed to cluster with the parameter - properties such as sentences with missing or null subjects, rich inflectional system, the absence of pleonastic or expletive pronouns, and the absence of a separate AUX node, some idiosyncratic and language - specific features such as the lack of free SV - inversion and constructions with lexical expletives are also attested. Regarding the ESL / EFL distinction, a comparison of our results with those of the studies carried out in an ESL environment shows no significant difference between the acquisition patterns of the subjects in these two acquisition settings, as far as the phenomenon under investigation is concerned..
