Summary or Abstract : This is not another research on the significance of vocubulary in language learning. There is an overabundance of them, nor is it merely a search on the efficacy of, or discrepencies between, seen and unseen materials. But this is a partical research serving a two - fold purpose. From one hand, it is an endeavor to unravel the enigma of vocabulary teaching in EFL environment by trying to delineate the discrepencies between two approaches to the teaching of lexicon, namely , the conventional way of teaching words based on the premise that students should receive the material before the instruction beings and embark upon reading it beforehand and preparing themselves before the class meets, and the other approach maintaining that if students are given the material in a sessionly fasion, ie , on the very session it is going to be taught, they would learn and retain the words much better and more conveniently. The research is then in the persuit of a more efficien way to teach vocabulary. From the other hand, however, the research is intended to look beyond this and to compare and contrast the two different psychological and cognitive processes underlying these two various modes of learning, that is to say, Assimilation And accommodation. The research method was that sixty university seniors majoring English Translation were randomly selected. They were then bisected, randomly again, into two thirty - student groups, one experimental and the other conrol. In a ten - week period of treatment, both groups were subjected to the instruction of twenty mini - passages, two passages per session..
