In doing this study, the researcher has had a number of goals in mind. His primary goal is to respond to a need for information on how vocubulary can best be learned. A second goal is to respond to the need among language teachers for guidance in how to present instruction that capitalizes on the knowledge and skills students bring to classrooms and encourages the development of new and more effective strategies for learning. The third and fourth goals are to see the effect of learning strategy training on vocabulary enhancement and retention of students and the defferent between males and females, If any at all. Some people believe that conscious mediation slows processes that otherwise might occur automatically. Others would prefer to replace it with the view that language learning involves many conscious decisions at both the cognitive and metacognitive levels, which parallel cognitive processes in learning other complex skills..
