Summary or Abstract : Second language learner's errors are potentially important for the understanding of second language Acquisition. It is possible that ESL teacher can profit by analyzing the errors made by learners in the process of second of second language learning. This study dealth with the errors committed by Iranian ESL learners. 105 University students were chosen in two groups in an attempt to elicit evidence for the influence of mother tongue as well as the role of overgenerlization in the process of learning, the strategies employed, the areas of difficulty, and, in general, their IL system. Junior ( lower - level) student tended to be more under the influence of mother tongue ( interence ). Senior ( higher - level ) students tended to make more errors that were the result of mutal interference within the target system( overgeraliration). Syntactic complexity was greater in advanced group. The areas of difficulty were the same for both groups, where as it was first thaught to be different. The differences were frequency of errors and the source of errors. The study showed that the ligher level group (senior) were in the process of " dentivization ". But what is it that makes both groups committ the same errors. More studies are needed to answer this and other questions in IL..
