Summary or Abstract : Foreign students are encountered with a new kind of interference in their comprehension. This may be called image or schema transfer from old data in their minds. This study tries to explain about Iranian studens' reading comprehension deficiency while encountering words in short texts.which evoke erroneous schemata in their minds. The results of this investigation provides ideas based on empirical data from two sets of translation works. Subjects are selected from two different educational levels and their comprehension is measured through translation. Attempts have been made to show the role of schema interference and background knowledge on both groups with the help of their comprehension improvement in text translation. The results show that beginners try to omit the unfamiliar words in their translations as they may be adept to hide what they do not hnow. Advanced students try to hide what they do not know. Advanced students try to adjust the meaning of the text with their background knowledge of individual words. In order to harmonize the text with the meaning in their minds they sometimes neglect the linguistic information provided in the texts. Schema interference seem to be more effective on post graduate readers. They make use of their prior knowledge to comprehend the text, which acts as an aid to schema interference. Beginners are more sensitive to contextual cues..
