Summary or Abstract : Reading is one of the enjoyable activities in any language but for those who have no perfect mastery of a language it could be difficult and boring. one of the ways for relieving this frustration is choosing interesting texts. And all over the world there is general agreement that literary texts are interesting. Furthermore, reading classes are often used to teach language skills rather than reading skills. However, the goal af enriching language skills should not impede the progress in the reading skills. so the hind of the text used should be such that develop reading skills. The suggestion here is that those literar texts which are simple but not simplified, should be used to get a better result. In the current study the relationship between the kind of the texts used as material in reading courses and the degree of success in achieving our goal, ie., teaching reading skills were analyzed. Therefore, two groups of freshman majoring in English were randomly selected. Then a test of English language proficiency was adminstered to measure the English language Knowledga of both groups. It was made clear that there is nocritical difference between their performance. The results of this research could have significant implications for those involved in preparing reading text books. They can achieve a better result by careful selection of appropriate texts. Those texts should be simple literary texts..
