Summary or Abstract : " Discourse analysis " is without doubt one of the most widely used and Loosely defined terms in the entire field of linguistics. At least two reasons for this come mind. The first one is that discourse, in all its many aspects, is a salient and important object of study in a large number of domains: it is hard to imagine a full account of human cognition, developmant, language, behaviour , culture , interaction , creativity , pathology , or simulation that does not attend discourse. The socond reason for the looseness of the term is that no one theory or account of discour has had a wide or strong acceptance to have an imperialistic monopoly on it. The present study tried to investigate the role of English discourse markers / connectives in reading comprehension of persian EFL studens. The null hypotheses were: 1. There is no difference in subjects' performance on the marker inserted passages with those without markers. 2. If the first hypothesis is rejected, what is the direction of those items in reading? In other words, whether discourse markers / connectives help the subjects to comprehend reading passages better and easier or they act as an hinderance? The findings of this research clarified that the role of English markers / connectives in reading comprehension of Persian EFL students was highly and definitly significant, and these items facilitate their reading ability..
