Summary or Abstract
|

English for specific purposes(ESP)has received considerable attention as an approach to teaching English as a second / Foreign Language. The influence of ESP in the areas of curriculum design and classroom materials has been substantial. However, despite enthusiastic interest in this approach, little has been done in the area of evaluation. There is a need for testing methodologies that will complement the advances in ESP as an approach to instruction. This study investigated the potential effect the familiarity with " content " and " language " may have on one's comprehension reading specific passages of his own field. The results of this study suggest that: 1." Content " familiarity is the key factor in comprehending specific reading passages. 2. " Language " familiarity only helps the learner when the " content " is unfamiliar to him, otherwise the higher the degree of " content " familiarity, the less the role of " language " would become..
