Summary or Abstract : Reading is perhaps the most throughly studied and least understood process in education. It is one of the most important activities in any language cass, not onmly as a source of in formation and pleasure, but also as a means of extending one's Knowledge and mostly of the language. Allof the subjects in the experiment were advanced students majoring in English language of ALLameh Tabatabaee university. The subjects were required to take three tests: 1. farsi reading comprehension test. 2. Michigan proficiency test 3. English reading comprehension test. The result shows the difference in value and significance of the t - statistic for the independent variables. There are different relative strengths of the two predictor variables. The proficiency in l2 is a stronger predictor of second language reading. Scince the relative strength of the effects of first language reading and second language proficiency differed, the relative attention to be given to each factor in second language reading pedagogy may nead to vary for different learners. Those readers of a foreign language with low proficiency level need to increase their ability in second language and those readers who have problems in L1 reading skills and in the transfor of non - language specific reading skills from their mother tongue to the second language need greater help with basic reading skills..
