Summary or Abstract : Theoretical as well as empirical research within the framework of schema - theoretical approaches to reading has shown reading comrehension to be an interaction between a text and reader. More Specifically, the interaction involves raeder background knowledge of text structure and the hierarchical content structure of the text.In her investigations of both adult and adolescent native readers of English, This research reports the results of the a study of the effects of rhetorical organization of different types of expository prose on Iranian EFL readers. Results indicate that certain more higly structured English rhetorical patterns are more facilitative of recall for Iranian EFL readers in general , but there are interesting differences between the results of this study and what have already been done on non - native readers of various linguistic backgrounds. what this implies is that devoting reading instruction to the identification of different discourse structures may be effective in facilitating ESL / EFl reading comprehension, retention , and recall..
