Summary or Abstract

As a subcategory of the cohesive devices, refrential devices are resources available in the surface froms of the texts to indicate relations which exist between sentences and clausal units in the texts. Besides their textual functions, the froms that referntial devices take bear consequences in maintaining or disturbing the balance between the two major principles of clarity and economy in any linguistic performance. Also, the choices that language users and, by extension, language learners make from among the available referential devices are also indicative of the socio - cultural values and patterns prevalent in the related societies. Hence, the proper acquisition and use of these devices, which are mainly discourse level phenomena, by second / foreign language learners is of crucial significance. The findings of the study revealed several facts. first, though participants' choices from among the referntial devices were found to be subject to certain universal constraints arising from the psychological make - up of human beings in general, there are meaningful differences between the two languages in terms of the reliance on different referntial devices arising from certain socio - cultural factors. Second, it was found that noticeable variations exist across the genres of narrative and descriptive in terms of the employment of different referential devices as dictated by the communicative needs of each genre..
