Summary or Abstract : Novel, upon which this study is going to focus, is a mixed genre. It is originated from different literary froms such as romance, epic, biography and so on. The gener is so eclectic that includes Robinson Crusoe, Moby Dick,Tristram Shandy, Ulysses and Malone Dies. Considering this variety and the fact that is a comparatively new genre seriously postpones the existence of a unanimously agreed upon poetics of the novel. The wider scope that the genre provides the novelist, in comparison to drama and poetry, permits him to embody a larger body of experience and employ different narrative strategies which suit purpose. But at the same time the novelist has a hard time to impose order on the distinguishable disparate parts which he has developed separately. If his work is supposed to be considered serious and artistic, it should have organic unity. The subject of this study is the duality of vision Faulkner's As I Lay Dying and The Sound and the Fury. The point which this study is going to focus on is that William Faulkner's greatness as a novelist is, to a large extent, due to his dual vision which Edmond L.Volpe has call " Stereoscopic vision and walter J.Slatoff has named as " Polar imagination ". He has the ability to deal with the specific by creating the realistic imaginary land of the Yoknapatawpha County and the universal condition of the modern man in the twentieth century by sharing the techniques of the international modernists simultaneosly..
