Summary or Abstract : The teaching of poetry to EFL students has always been a very demanding tesk. It is commonly assumed that English poetry is too difficult for foreign students to cope with and therefore out of their reach.Despite the renewed interest in teaching literary texts in the classroom, little has been written about teaching poetry to college - level students in this country. Many English instructors and hundereds of university students do not enjoy English poetry. Even a majority of them express a negative attitude toward poetry. No one can deny that poetry is difficult not to EFL students, but also to native speakears. My long experience in teaching poetry to Iranian college students has impelled me to come to the conclusion that the strong prejudice of students towards poetry can be ascribed, among many other facts, to the following problems: 1. Inappropriate selection of texts. 2. Ineffective teaching methodology. This study suggests a language - based approach for the teaching of English poetry in EFL situation at the college level. The purpose of this study is to assess the relative effectiveness of the language - based approach compared to the traditional approach compared to the traditional approach in improving the students' attitude toward English poetry at intermediate level at Allameh - Tabataba'i university..
