Summary or Abstract

In the past two decades we have witnessed a movement from narrow methods to broader integrated approaches in language teaching, approaches which focus on the use of language for both learning and communication. One such approach is content - based language teaching.Arguing that language acquisition occurs when the learner understands the messages in that language (e.g.Krashen, 1984), the proponents of content - based instruction focus on the subject - matter and not on the from. That is, "what" is taught is important rather "how". A language pre - test and post - test was administered to evaluate the students' progress. It was found that all students - in both general - based instruction and content - based instruction had improved their language proficiency significantly. Although the students in content - based instruction had not received any instruction on language from and vocubulary, their language proficieny had improved significantly. In aasddition, post ESP tests showed that the students in both types of instruction had made pronounced progress in reading texts in their specialism. Of course, the students in conten - based instruction manifested more improvement, although the difference was not statistically significant..
