Summary or Abstract : In Shelly, the emphasis is mainly on self - knowledge. Readers through empathetic relationships with the "beautiful idealisms " gain knowledge and are subject to transformation. Shelley clearly states that the functions of art, in general, and poetry, in particular, are two fold: by one it creates new materials of knowledge and power and pleasure: by the other it engenders in the mind a desire to reproduce and arrange them according to a certain rhythm and order, which may be called the beautiful and the good. Shelly tries to activate soul's desire for perfection and goodness. There is a gap between man's internal ideal type and external actual type. The ideal type is that which one likes to develop. Imagination can awaken that ideal type..
