: There is a controversy among different researchers concerning the effect of certain modes of discourse on writing performance of college students.Although there have been some researches in L1 and L2 to confirm that the writers perform differently in different modes of discourse , there has been few , if not any , researches to confirm or reject the validity of these findings in EFL writing. Therefore, this research study was conducted to investigate the effect of modes of discourse on the attitude and preference of Iranian EFL learners. Firstly , it was decided to conduct this research study in the pilot phase to find out the problems and drawbacks the researcher might encounter in the main study. The pilot study showed that the structure of the prompts had to be improved and some new prompts be added to the list of the topics. The results of the main study revealed that the students did not have any prefereces towards the topics when they were not obliged to write, but when had to write in the exam. The results showed that exposition has received the highest frequency and description and argument the lowest, and narration somewhere between. The same order which was observed when the students chose their desired topics to write on on the exam..
