: The purpose of this study was to determine the common strategies used for translating TV subtitles from Persian into English in the light of the Relevance Theory. It was inspired by the research carried out by Kovacic (1994) over the role of the Relevance Theory in reducing the content of original film dialogs while translating them as subtitles. This research used a model of subtitling strategies introduced by Gottlieb (1992). It investigated English subtitles from 920 frames of 20 TV serials that had been selected on a random basis. A total of 1,556 instances of main strategies introduced by Gottlieb were identified of which Transfer had the highest frequency and Decimation the least. No instances for two strategies, namely Transcription and Imitation, could be identified. Instead, a new strategy was introduced named Contextual Adjustment. Most of the main strategies had several sub-categories that totaled 46 altogether. They were not included in Gottlieb's model and were detected thanks to the principles of the Relevance Theory. The findings testified that Relevance Theory can be consulted for researches on translating subtitles from Persian into English. Also, this theory, as indicated in this research, can be efficient in doing researches about translating spoken Persian into English. Therefore, Relevance can serve as the theoretical framework for researches about Persian-into-English dubbing, as well as simultaneous or consecutive interpretation..
