Learning a SL/FL is a burdensome accomplishment which is not immune to the defect of attrition. After some time of disuse, FL/SL learners tend to forget the learnt materials. Vocabulary items particularly idiomatic expressions including phrasal verbs are more prone to attrition. The degree of productivity/receptivity of the exercises through which vocabularies are practiced can play a discernable role on these items' retention after a period of disuse. Furthermore it is believed that more productively practiced linguistic items tend to be remembered more than receptively practiced ones. This study intended to explore the impact of the degree of productivity/receptivity implemented in exercises used to practice phrasal verbs on their attrition/retention after a month's interval. The participants were 39 conversational course students of Interchange 1 in a private language institute. Before the course the researcher gave a pretest to choose a) 30 most unfamiliar phrasal verbs to the participants and b) to homogenize participants. After the instruction, the participants were given the first pretest the results of which were compared to those of the second posttest to probe which way of practicing i.e. productive, semi-productive or receptive resulted in more attrition/retention of the items. The pretest and the second posttest were a revised version of Vocabulary Knowledge Scale Test by Laufer & Wesche (1993) and the first posttest was a teacher-made cloze test. After a month's interval between the first and the second posttests, the changes in the scores were investigated. Descriptive statistics was run to probe the null hypotheses. The researcher found out the degree of productivity of the exercises used to practice the phrasal verbs had an impact on their attrition/retention in that the higher the degree of productivity the lower the amount of attrition. The merely receptively practiced items were not retained to a desirable degree. The semi- productive practicing stood in between..
