: The main problem of the newly independent Central Asian Republics is their being landlocked and lack of access to the high seas. Central Asia was long under the control of Moscow, and today Russia still exercises considerable influence although the US has been able to get a foothold in the area in view of its strategic geo- political location as well as abundant natural resources. After the collapse of the USSR in 1991, and discovery of new Oil and Gas resources in this area, it seems a 'new great game' has started for exploitation of the hydrocarbon resources and political control of this strategic region. Russia and its network of pipelines provide the Central Asian Republics an easy access to energy- energystarved Europe, but putting all eggs in Moscow's basket will certainly impair both their economic development and political independence. This means that what the Central Asian states need is a viable route to the international markets without jeopardizing their economy as well as national sovereignty. It is here that Iran with its strategic geopolitical location as a bridge between Asia, Europe and the Middle East, emerges as the safe, short and economical route for the landlocked countries to its north. This thesis tries to focus on the feasibility of the Iranian route for the Central Asian and Caucasus states by highlighting not just the traditional connections and commonalities resulting from the strong influence of Persian culture, or for that matter the cordial political and economic ties built by Tehran in the region, but also because of the security and stability enjoyed by Iran despite the magnitude of US hostility towards the Islamic Republic. An attempt has been made to explain that Iran's abundance of skilled manpower and development of indigenous technology, coupled with its emphasis on collective regional development has turned the country into the logical link for flow of Oil and Gas from Caspian and its hinterlands to the outside world. To prove this point, a comparative study has been carried out concerning the other routes available such as Russia's North and South Streams, TAPI, BTC, BTE, China, etc..
