Summary or Abstract : In contrast to extensive research in reading, few studies have been done to investigate the role of discourse signaling cues in foreign language listening comprehension. The current study examined the effects of discourse signaling cues on Iranian EFL students' listening comprehension in academic lectures and also investigated the effect of teaching Iranian EFL students about the role and function of discourse signaling cues on successful listening comprehension of lectures. The study involved 77 Iranian EFL students who were divided into three groups. Group A, the control group, consisted of 27 students, who listened to signaled lectures and didn't get any training on the role of discourse signaling cues. Group B and C, experimental groups, each consisted of 25 students. Group B listened to the non- signaled text and didn t get training on the role of discourse signaling cues. Group C listened to the signaled text and also got training on the role and function of discourse signaling cues in a text. The participants listened to two academic lectures and then did recall tasks. The recall tasks were scored on the number of correct propositions the participants remembered and mentioned on the answer sheets. The findings showed that discourse signaling cues play an important role in EFL students' listening comprehension. The findings also showed that training the students about the role and function of discourse signaling cues has significant effect on the students' EFL listening comprehension..
