: The aim of this research is to investigate a corpus- based study to find out the nature of changes or shifts in the process of translation. The corpus consisted of 30 verses from the Holy Qur'an with three different English translations by three translators: Arberry, Pickthall and Shakir. Catford's model of category shifts was used as the theoretical framework to analyze the first thirty verses of the Chapter Spider at two levels of word and sentence to see whether shifts are the results of constraints imposed upon translators or they are the results of idiosyncratic style of translators or a combination of both factors. First the analysis was carried out at two levels and the shifts applied by the translators were categorized, then the three translations were compared with one another to determine where and to what extent the translators were unanimous or different from one another in application or non application of shifts in their translations. In the next stage the total average of shifts that the translators have applied was displayed in different tables and the percentage of idiosyncratic or obligatory shifts applied by each translator was shown. The mean percentage of four different shifts and the mean percentage of three translators 'choice of shifts indicate to what extent the shifts are obligatory, idiosyncratic or a combination of both factors. Finally the research questions were answered using the results of the study..
