: One of the main means of facilitating comprehension in reading classes is through the use of appropriately designed pre-reading activities. Two main lines of investigation were pursued in this study: the first relates to the relative effectiveness of the different pre-reading formats, and the second to the possibility of an interaction between pre- reading format and L2 proficiency level. The participants were 104 male Iranian pre-university students of Gachsaran. They were divided into two groups of low and high language proficiency levels (each 52). Then each proficiency group was divided into four sub-groups (each 13) under three experimental conditions namely, prequestioning, vocabulary preteaching, summary, and one control group. Results indicated that different prereading activities exerted different degrees of facilitation on reading comprehension of students. In the bargain, it was found that language proficiency did have an effect on the employment of prereading activities. The findings showed that high proficiency students performed better under prequestioning condition while those in low proficiency group benefited the most with vocabulary preteaching treatment. Drawing on the outcomes of this study, teachers could tailor prereading activities to the language proficiency levels of their students in order to reap maximum benefit of reading instruction..
