: The translating profession is generally assumed to be afflicted with misconceptions coming from the general public and commissioners. This study was an attempt to investigate the veracity and depth of the problem. With this aim in view, 2 groups, 60 respondents each, were chosen: commissioners and professional translators. A separate Likert scale questionnaire was designed for each group. The collected data were entered into SPSS and, in order to test the statistical significance of the findings, Chi- square test was run on the data with a significance level of 0.05. The findings were discussed under seven topics. The results indicated that commissioners had a fairly rightful image of many aspects of the translating profession. Translators, however, attributed most of the proposed misconceptions to commissioners. As an instance, an overwhelming majority of commissioners rejected the misconception that MT is replacing human translators, whereas most translators considered this as a misconception among commissioners. Some areas of sharp conflict, such as the deadlines and rates, were also revealed. For example, most translators found economic cost the main factor in selecting translators, while most commissioners disagreed with this..
