: The interdependence of language and culture reveals the fact that in the process of translation, we are always dealing with the source culture (foreign culture). In this way, the translator as cultural mediator must know the foreign culture as well as language. To study the necessity of cultural knowledge for the translator, we examined the impact of translator s cultural knowledge on the quality of his or her translation. Therefore, we selected three short texts containing cultural words and we asked five groups of translation trainees to translate them into Persian; in addition, we determined the level of cultural knowledge of each student using a questionnaire. After analyzing translations and the answers of questionnaire, we realized that those who have richer cultural knowledge were much more successful in understanding cultural words. Moreover, according to the questionnaires, university courses are mostly concentrated on linguistic abilities and don t provide enough knowledge about the foreign culture. So in the last part of this work, we have suggested methods to enrich the cultural competence of students. Indeed, this research indicates that the translator's linguistic knowledge does not always lead to a correct translation. Knowing the culture is as necessary as that of language.
