: This study was intended to explore the effects of teaching English through literary texts on learners' reading motivation and comprehension by comparing it to teaching English through academic or non-literary texts. This study is a quasi-experimental study in which two intact classes of advanced female EFL students, including 30 participants, from a language institute in Tehran were selected and randomly assigned as literary text group and academic text group. The pretest scores were obtained by administering a reading motivation questionnaire and a TOEFL reading comprehension test to both groups. The participants in the literary text group were assigned literary readings, while the participants in the academic text group were assigned non-literary or academic readings. After one-month period, posttest scores were obtained by administering the same pretests to both groups. Using the spss, both paired t-test and independent samples t-test were used for data analysis. The results of data analysis showed that both groups had improved in terms of reading motivation and reading comprehension during the term, but comparing the two groups, it was found that the literary text group outperformed the academic text group in reading motivation. On the other hand, there was no significant difference in the improvement of learners' reading comprehension scores in the two groups..
