: The present study was intended to explore situations which cause both willingness to communicate and unwillingness to communicate among Iranian language-major students and to describe the psychological processes underlying them. To this end, participants used the focused essay technique to report the situations that affect their level of WTC. They described situations in which they were most willing to communicate (377 entries received) and situations in which they were least willing to communicate (306 entries received). Diary entries manifest complex interrelations among linguistic development, L2 self-development, and the non-linguistic issues that typically face second language learners. Most frequently students reported communication with classmates and friends out of school context, but other entries described communication with teachers and classmates inside the classroom, with family members, acquaintances, strangers, English native speakers, and foreign speakers of English. They also reported their encounters with technology and media. By utilizing MacIntyre, D?rnyei, Clement & Noels's WTC pyramid model (1998), along with some well-known contemporary motivations theories such as Ryan & Deci's self-determination theory (2000), Covington's self-worth theory (1998), Atkinson's achievement motivation theory (1957), and Ames's goal-orientation theory (1992), perceived competence, autonomy, relatedness and affiliation, achievement, power, self-worth and mastery goal orientation were identified as WTC-affecting issues. Although there exist significant similarities between situations in which students are most or least willing to communicate, they can be differentiated by subtle changes in context that affect the authenticity of communication and needs for autonomy, competence, relatedness, affiliation, achievement, power, mastery and self-worth..
