Summary or Abstract : This thesis studies gender and social relations after the 1960s through the eyes of Caryl Churchill's (born 1938) Cloud Nine (1978) and David Mamet's (born 1947) Oleanna (1992). It evaluates Churchill's criticism of certain defined roles imposed by patriarchal society as well as the illustrations of American Dream, self concept and lost identities, given by Mamet, referring to Foucault's definition of sexuality, power and knowledge. Pre defined identities, along with the need to reach to the truth of one's self and the modern urge to confess concealed desires, which were the central subjects of scientific discourses in late nineteenth centuries, are argued in the current study. Both writers' attempts for drawing society as a suppressive tool and social roles as forced duties are also discussed within Foucault's theoretical framework in which there is an invisible circle of power whereby dominant group is allowed to label and consequently banish minority groups standing outside the circle. As for sexuality, this thesis examines Foucault's notion of sexual genealogy (emerged changes in pertaining concepts to sexuality throughout centuries) disclosing the special bound between power, gender and sexual labels, challenging cultural gender roles as well as sexual divisions that lead into social discrimination and consequently social upheavals. Regarding to the central issues, this study has a glance on social movements from 1960s onwards, especially homosexual movements and feminism..
